What is Levoxyl used for

Levoxyl is a thyroid hormone for the treatment of insufficient thyroid hormone production. It is prescribed for euthyroid goiter, to prevent recurrence of the disease after surgery, therapy of malignancy. The drug is effective against diffuse toxic goiter. It is used during the thyroid suppression test.

Pharmacological properties of Levoxyl generic

Levoxyl medication is an isomer of thyroxine that undergoes partial metabolism in the liver and kidneys. As a result, it affects growth, tissue development, and metabolic processes in the body: oxidation in the mitochondria, substrate fluxes in the cells, and post-metabolism. Anabolic action occurs at minimal concentrations of the main component. Medium doses increase cellular oxygen demand, resulting in enhanced metabolic processes and increased activity of the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. A high concentration of the synthetic hormone leads to a decrease in the production and release of thyrotropin-releasing hormone in the hypothalamus and thyrotropic hormone in the pituitary gland.

Taking Levoxyl medication is necessary if the body doesn’t produce enough of the necessary thyroid hormone. The effect of taking the drug is observed after 7-12 days and lasts for the same period after withdrawal. Therapy with the drug helps get rid of diffuse goiter in 3-6 months. In the later stages, Levoxyl helps reduce the formation by 30% and prevents its growth.

Levoxyl dosage

Levoxyl medication should be taken in the morning half an hour before breakfast with water. The daily dose can be taken at one time. If the patient misses an appointment, the dose is not increased at the next appointment. The amount of medication is determined on the basis of clinical studies. Therapy should be started with the minimum acceptable dose and increase the amount of the drug after 2-3 weeks in case of normal tolerance.

In children with a congenital thyroid hormone deficiency, therapy starts with 10-15 mcg per 1 kg of the body per day for the first three months. After that, the amount of the drug is adjusted depending on laboratory values. Elderly patients with pathology accompanied by cardiovascular system disorders, diabetes, and other diseases are recommended to start treatment with the minimum amount.

Levoxyl medication is taken from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the patient's condition and the course of the disease. In some cases, life-long use of the drug to maintain the normal condition of the body is shown.

Levoxyl vs Synthroid

Both drugs are prescribed for the treatment of insufficient thyroid hormones, diffuse and toxic goiter, after surgical interventions. They differ in effectiveness after several months of use. They shouldn’t be taken at the same time without consulting a doctor and prior tests because of the risk of hyperthyroidism.
